University Landscape
The impact of university settlements in the suburbs of Milan and their reciprocal influence, both esthetic and structural.
This essay researches through contemporary landscape photography, the impact that University settlements have had on the outskirts areas they have been built in Politecnico di Milano, IULM, UniversitĂ degli Studi Milano-Bicocca.
These traditionally industrial areas have undergone a crisis of identity when the landscape started to change in relation to the new function of the neighborhood. Looking for a possible relation between university and neighborhood, this photographic work is composed by two parallel and twisted tales. Each couple of images shows the urban landscape (above) and the university one (below).
The relation between the landscapes is, therefore, built by a photographic composition that guides the observer form one picture to the other following shapes, contrasts, colors and details that underline contamination and opposition. At first an esthetic and artificial relationship, invented by the author, but also the map to read the sprout of a real connection.
