Nina's Drag Queen School
A journey through the first Drag Queen school in Milan. Here they teach how to become much-more-than-just-a-woman.
I have started to photograph Nina's Drag Queens in November of 2009, when the first Drag Queen and Faux Queen school was set up at the Teatro Ringhiera.
They met in the basement of the theatre and, wearing high heels and a track suit, they taught the newcomers how to be a woman. Under the neon lights, they learnt how to sing Raffaella Carrà's favorite song in playback. They learnt how to be elegant in 12cm heel worn on an overly-large foot, how to be sensual wearing a little black dress adorned with ostrich feathers.
I have attended a large part of Nina’s classes, where she encouraged the new sisters to find their sensuality and erotic side and to expose it without fear or embarrassment. I was witnessing a transformation, the opportunity of a human being of being something other than himself.
This is the story of the first Drag Queen school in Milan.
